Yoga and Children ? Increasingly Popular

If you thought yoga was just for adults, you need to think again.

If you thought yoga was just for adults, you need to think again. Nowadays, yoga is greatly popular among all ages ‘ especially with kids. Practicing yoga actually enables children to develop a fitness program and a way of healthy living. Yoga can give children these tools at a young age ‘ allowing them to start out the right way. Why would children need yoga? Consider the obesity problem existing with children today. Weight problems will result in health problems. It’s a great idea to have a physical activity for kids that will exercise and entertain. Also, it will relieve stress or tension in their lives caused by school, peer pressures, competitive sports and busy lives. Yoga is a healthy way for a child to deal with difficult situations and resolve them. You may not have thought you would see children in yoga classes, but many yoga followers are beginning to see if yoga makes them feel good, then why not let it make their children feel good also. The yoga classes a parent attends might offer a ‘mommy and me’ class, or you can just practice it at home with your children. Children love to mimic and they will love to try to get into the different positions you assume. Children’s yoga may differ from adult yoga in that dogma and spirituality aren’t stressed. Children’s yoga will revolve around storytelling, repetition, counting, problem solving, dancing and movements. It will keep the child’s attention and keep them interested in it. The physical benefits of yoga for kids are obvious. They will develop greater flexibility, strength, good posture and coordination. The mental benefits would include concentration, relaxation and calmness. But the benefits do not end here. Studies have shown that students taking yoga have fewer disciplinary problems, higher grades and are more physically fit. It is a noncompetitive form of exercise that can and will build confidence. If these are not enough benefits to convince you, yoga is also very valuable for children with special needs. Many physicians today even recommend yoga for special needs children. It can help children with Downs Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, Attention Deficit Disorder and Autism. These children need an outlet for their energy. This is a perfect outlet. They can refine their motor skills, learn to articulate better, develop improved eye contact and social skills, as well as, strengthen and tone their bodies. If the child has physical limitations, poses can be altered to use only certain portions of their bodies. Yoga is gaining momentum in the world today and rightly so. It is for everyone, even kids. Whether you are young or old, whether you have special needs or physical limitations, it can be tailored for the individual to get the best results possible for them. Kids and yoga seem like a natural match. It can be therapeutic for those who need it. Kids can develop healthy bodies at an early age and also healthy habits. This is something they can keep with them for the rest of their lives.

Understanding Heart Disease

Article by F. Kuhn, RN

UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS OF YOUR HEART AND HEART DISEASE

Understand the basics associated with your heart and blood vessels. Here you will get an understanding of all the different types of cardiovascular disease that can be confusing. Get a basic overview of cardiovascular disease and the conditions that can affect your heart and blood vessels.

You probably hear a lot about preventing heart disease. But maybe you’re not sure what heart disease is. Is it the same thing as cardiovascular disease, coronary artery disease or other heart terms you sometimes see?

With many medical terms related to the heart and blood vessels, it’s no wonder you may be puzzled or confused. Here you will have a chance to brush up on some basic terms about cardiovascular disease (CVD) that can help you stay more informed. This can then help you when you’re watching the news or meeting with your doctor.

The first term to know is Cardiovascular Disease or CVD. CVD is a broad term. CVD is a large collection of diseases and conditions.

If you want to be technical, CVD refers to any disorder in any of the various parts of your heart system. Your cardiovascular system consists of your heart and all the blood vessels throughout your whole body.

Cardiovascular disease has two main mechanisms:

Diseases of the Heart (cardio)

Diseases of the Blood Vessels (vascular)

Everything from an aneurysm to a heart attack to varicose veins are all types of CVD. You may be born with a type of CVD (congenital) or you may acquire others later on in life possibly from a lifetime of unhealthy habits, lack of exercise, smoking, and other factors.

Here’s a closer look at the two mechanisms of cardiovascular disease.

Diseases of the Heart

The diseases and conditions that affect the heart are in a group known as heart disease. The heart consists of a muscle that pumps blood. Arteries supply blood to the heart muscle, and the valves make sure that the blood within the heart is pumped in the right direction. Problems can occur in any of these areas.

Just like CVD, Heart Disease is a broad term.

Here are the specific types of heart disease:

**Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)

**Coronary Heart Disease (CHD)

**Cardiomyopathy

**Valvular heart disease

**Pericardial disease

**Congenital heart disease

**Heart failure (CHF)

Diseases of the Blood Vessels

Blood vessels are in basic terms hollow tubes that carry blood to the organs and tissues throughout your body.

There are 4 basic types of blood vessels:

Arteries. These blood vessels carry oxygenated blood to all parts of the body

Veins. These blood vessels carry deoxygenated blood back to your heart. That is why they have a bluish cast to their color

Capillaries. These are tiny vessels that connect your arteries and veins.

Lymphatics. Fluid that leaks out of your capillaries in order to bathe your cells.

Here are some types of blood vessel disorders:

**Arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis

**High blood pressure (HBP) or Hypertension (HTN)

**Stroke

**Aneurysm

**Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) and claudication

**Vasculitis

**Venous incompetence

**Venous thrombosis or blood clot

**Varicose veins

**Lymphedema

Heart Disease is a serious condition. Watch your fatty food intake, smoking, as well as your sweet tooth intake. Both can cause serious heart problems.

It is best to start out slow when changing your diet. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is a great way to start.

Play And Workout For Cats. Guide To A Healthy Family Pet

Play And Workout For Cats. Guide To A Healthy Family Pet

Regular and moderate exercise will help to keep your cat’s aging joints limber and strong. It will strengthen and tone her muscles, maintain her at a proper weight, increase her energy level, help her sleep better, strengthen her cardiovascular system, and keep her internal organs strong and healthy.

Just as important, play and exercise will fend off boredom, keep her mind sharp. And help to prevent the emotional shifts that all too often accompany old age. And here is a bid bonus, playing with your cat will make you feel better too, and will help to keep the bond between you strong.

As your cat enters her senior years, she will not, of course, need as much exercise as she did as a kitten and young adult. But barring a health problem that precludes activity, she does need to do more than toddle to the food bowl and litter box a few times a day. Unfortunately, she may be less willing to self exercise than she used to be, so it is your job to find ways to encourage your cat to move around.

The good news is that the best exercise is play. Forget the burn; just encourage your cat to play with you. Granted, getting an adult cat to play can be a challenge, particularly if she has been spending most of her time in sedentary pursuits like eating, grooming and sleeping.

The challenge may be compounded if your cat has a physical limitation such as poor hearing or vision, for instance, may make it more difficult to engage her interest. With a little imagination, though, you can probably get her up and moving. Remember, no matter how sweet and pretty and cuddly, your cat is a hunter at heart. Appeal to her predatory instincts with toys that move and that make high pitched squeaky sounds.

Things to Prepare for Wedding Planning

When it comes to wedding planning there are many things that you need to think about and prepare for. Most weddings end up being anywhere from fifty people or more and this means that the preplanning of the wedding is crucial to make sure that everything goes off without a hitch. If you’re getting married and planning your wedding you’ll want to start months in advance so that you have time to have everything exactly as you want it. Wedding planning starts with picking a date so that you can make sure that all other planning centers around it. Once you have the date picked you’ll have to see if the church is available. If you’re having your wedding in a place other than a church you’ll want to make sure that the minister or priest is available on that date. After the date of the wedding has been confirmed you’re ready to plan the rest of it. You’ll need to have an exact guest count so that you know how big a space you need to rent for your reception. You’ll also need to have an approximate head count so that you can get your invitations ready to send out. It’s polite to send your wedding invitations out at least six weeks in advance and even sooner for those guests that you have arriving from out of town. After you have a head count and know exactly how many people are coming to your wedding you’ll need to hire a caterer. Weddings usually have a more elaborate menu than other celebrations but if you’re on a limited budget you might have to choose carefully. Many caterers will give you a discount for the more people that you have attending so if you’re having a large wedding you might be able to find some special rates. There are many other details that need to be taken care of when planning weddings but the date, the location, invitations, and caterer are the main focus points.

TSA removes 48 Honolulu screeners, bosses for not checking for explosives

The Transportation Security Administration today removed or suspended 48 screeners and managers in Honolulu for failing to check luggage for explosives.

Update at 6:37 p.m. ET: Catching up with the Honolulu paper, the Associated Press now reports that 36 TSA screeners and managers at Honolulu Airport have been removed from their jobs and that 12 others have been suspended.

The president of the National Treasury Employees Union, which represents non-supervisory workers, issued a statement supporting the affected employees and blaming pressure from airlines and TSA managers. At this writing the statement is not yet posted on its website, but the Star-Advertiser quotes from it.

"This unfortunate situation is a matter of considerable concern, but should not be taken as indicative of the behavior and professionalism of the vast majority of TSA officers," said NTEU President Colleen M. Kelley. "In fact, it was TSA employees that brought these problems forward.

"While no one condones compromising security measures designed to keep the traveling public safe, it is NTEU's understanding that pressure from airlines and supervisors to ensure that morning international flights departed from Honolulu on time led to the events triggering the investigation and resulting discipline."

Original post: After a six-month investigation, 36 security screeners and supervisors at Honolulu Airport were removed from their jobs today for not checking baggage for explosives, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports.

The Transportation Security Administration said it delivered 36 letters of removal, the first step in firing the workers, who were placed on administrative leave. Among them are five top managers, including the federal security director and the assistant federal deputy director for screening.

The Star-Advertiser reports that 12 additional TSA employees were suspended from two weeks to 30 days. It's not clear, however, whether the 12 are among or in addition to the 36. The Associated Press reports only that TSA is "proposing firing 36 workers" it says "were placed in non-security roles pending the outcome of the six-month investigation." No mention of 12 additional suspensions.

A TSA spokeswoman would not identify the workers, citing privacy laws.

Two TSA employees reported in December that luggage was put on flights without being screened or checked for explosives. The unscreened bags passed through Lobby 4, mostly in the morning.

Lobby 4 is used by Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Air Pacific, Alaska Air, All Nippon Airways, China Airlines, Delta Airlines, Jetstar Airways, Korean Air, Philippine Airlines, Qantas and WestJet.

It's Jack White's Anniversary ? I Mean Divorce ? Party!

Jack White, he of the pale face and White Stripes, and Karen Elson, she of the long legs and shaved eyebrows, are splitting after six years of marriage. We know this, because they're celebrating it in advance with a party. (We hope their immediate families found out another way.)

The invitation to their anniversary/divorce fiesta almost looks like an some kind of arch joke: "Please help us celebrate the making and breaking of the sacred union of marriage with our best friends and animals." But the couple released a statement that confirmed their intention to be put asunder, New York Magazine reported.

White has made it something of a policy to have almost freakishly peaceable divorces. He continued performing with his first wife Meg White of the White Stripes after they split, even trying to persuade the press that they were siblings.

Since marrying White, Elson has been doing less modeling in favor of raising their two kids in Nashville and pursuing a musical career. The two got married in Brazil, in a canoe on the Amazon, by a Shaman. A Catholic priest blessed the union just to be doubly safe.

But, alas, even as ecumenical a nuptial crew as that couldn't keep the divorce voodoo off yet another rock star-model coupling. It's sad for the kids ? little Scarlett and Henry Lee ? but we can at least look forward to seeing how agreeably White's future marriages end.

Rare, Aggressive Skin Fungus Strikes Joplin Tornado Victims

A Joplin doctor said Thursday his hospital treated five Joplin tornado victims for a rare, aggressive fungal infection sometimes found in survivors of other natural disasters.

Dr. Uwe Schmidt, an infectious disease specialist at Freeman Health System in Joplin, said three of those patients who contracted zygomycosis have since died, but he stopped short of blaming their deaths specifically on the infections.

"These people had multiple traumas, pneumonia, all kinds of problems," Schmidt said. "It's difficult to say how much the fungal infections contributed to their demise."

Jacqueline Lapine, a spokeswoman for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, said the department has received reports of eight suspected deep-skin fungal infections among victims of the tornado. She said all of the victims had sustained trauma from the tornado with multiple injuries and secondary wound infections.

Zygomycosis, now known as mucormycosis, is a fungal infection that spreads rapidly and can be caused by soil or vegetative material becoming embedded under the skin. It's more prevalent in people with weakened immune systems or untreated diabetes but can affect healthy people who suffer trauma and are injected with contaminated soil.

Dr. Benjamin Park with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said people who have had a traumatic skin injury that is not improving should seek medical attention immediately so the infection can be identified and treated promptly.

"These fungal infections are usually quite serious, and often have a case-fatality rate of 50 percent or higher," Park said in an email to The Associated Press. "Although persons with weakened immune systems and those with diabetes are the most common risk groups, otherwise healthy people can develop infection, particularly after a traumatic wound. Skin infection usually occurs following traumatic inoculation of the fungal spores into the skin."

Schmidt said he had seen only two cases of zygomycosis in his 30 years of practice, and both of those cases involved people with untreated diabetes.

"I never have seen personally this kind of fungal infection of the skin," he said.

Stacy Fender, a spokeswoman for CoxHealth, said Cox South hospital in Springfield has one patient who may have a fungal infection.

Overall numbers weren't available. The health department in Springfield-Greene County, where some patients were treated, declined to release information about patients sickened by the fungus, citing patient privacy concerns.

The Springfield News-Leader reported the department sent a memo Monday to area health providers warning them to be on the lookout for the infections.

Kendra Williams, the administrator of community health and epidemiology for the health department, said the fungus likely came from soil or vegetative materials imbedded in the skin by the tornado.

In the aftermath of the tornado, Freeman Health System treated more than 1,700 patients. Doctors from St. John's Hospital, which was hit by the twister, treated patients at makeshift facilities.

Schmidt said some wounds that were stitched up had to be reopened because they weren't adequately cleaned.

"These were very extensive wounds," Schmidt said. "They were treated in the emergency room as quickly as possible."

A week after the tornado patients began arriving with fungal infections.

"We could visibly see mold in the wounds," Schmidt said. "It rapidly spread. The tissue dies off and becomes black. It doesn't have any circulation. It has to be removed."

Schmidt said the infection is sometimes seen in survivors of mass trauma such as the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia.

"This fungus invades the underlying tissue and actually invades the underlying blood vessels and cuts off the circulation to the skin," Schmidt said. "It's very invasive."

State News: Mass. Immigrant Care; Pension Benefit Changes In Calif. Cities

News outlets report on a range of state health policy issues and developments.

The Boston Globe: Immigrant Health Care Back In Court
Thousands of legal immigrants may have to wait weeks longer to find out whether the state's highest court will order Massachusetts to restore their full health insurance benefits. Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Associate Justice Robert J. Cordy today ordered lawyers for the state to file their motions by June 23 (Lazar, 6/9).

Bloomberg: California Cities Carry Out Pension Changes While Brown Still Negotiating
With little public comment and about 15 people in attendance, the City Council of Brea, California, voted unanimously last month to slash pensions for future hires and require current employees to pay as much as 4.5 percent of their salary toward retirement, up from zero. The city of 40,000, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles, had negotiated the changes with its unions, so there wasn't any objection from them. By next year, according to a city report, employees will be contributing $1 million more annually to their pension benefits. Brea is among about 90 cities in the most populous state that have made changes to their pension plans, according to an informal list kept by the California Public Employees' Retirement System, while Governor Jerry Brown and lawmakers wrestle over ways to lower costs (Palmeri, 6/10).

Stateline: In California, Adult Day Care Program Is Threatened With Extinction
California has decided to cut Medicaid funding for (adult day care) to save money in the current budget. For the state, there's an equally depressing reality that health officials will eventually have to confront: Defunding the centers won't save any money in the long-run; it will cost more money. ... Many patients will end up calling emergency medical services, going to emergency rooms and getting admitted and re-admitted to hospitals. Some will go directly to nursing homes. Instead of paying $76 per day for adult health care, the state will have to reimburse nursing homes at a rate of $200 per day (Vestal, 6/10).

Des Moines Register: Insurance Fee Added For Some City Workers
All nonunion city of Ankeny employees will contribute to medical plan insurance premiums starting July 1, City Manager Carl Metzger announced Monday. The cost is estimated at $123 to $316 annually based on the type of plan employees choose, including employee only, employee/spouse, employee/children or employee/family (6/10).

Minnesota Public Radio: Fear Of Shutdown Grows Each Day For State Workers
There are three weeks until a possible state government shutdown. ... Many of the 36,000 employees are wondering whether they'll continue working in July, when the government will shut down if a deal isn't reached. Among them is Melanie Wurtzberger, a social worker at the Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter. ... Wurtzberger and her husband, an electrical contractor, are covered by her health insurance, but he is in remission from cancer and the couple will have to pay $1,300 a month to continue their health coverage if the government shuts down. She said they're worried about draining their savings to pay their bills (Scheck, 6/10).

Georgia Health News: Health Plan For State Workers Faces Bigger Hole
The Department of Community Health said Thursday that it will have to draw down reserves further, and make more benefit or premium changes, to shore up the State Health Benefit Plan, which covers about 700,000 employees, teachers, school personnel and retirees, as well as dependents. Vince Harris, chief financial officer of DCH, told the agency's board members that $74 million in additional benefit plan changes would have to be found. That's on top of $72 million that the agency had already identified. Already, members of the State Health Benefit Plan are expecting a 10 percent increase in their health insurance premiums beginning in January (Miller, 6/9).

The Lund Report: Oregon Hospitals Reduce Infection Rates
Oregon hospitals reported overall lower rates of healthcare acquired infections last year as a result of a statewide effort and a public reporting system now in its third year (Rosenfeld, 6/9).

Birmingham News: Alabama Lawmakers OK Public Vote On Federal Health Care Opt Out Amendment For Constitution
State lawmakers today approved a plan that will let voters decide whether to rewrite the state constitution to say that people and employers in Alabama could opt out of the federal health care overhaul passed by Congress last year. ... The bill does not go to Gov. Robert Bentley for his review, but goes directly to the voters for them to approve or reject it (White, 6/9).

The Boston Globe: Health Board Pay Ban Could Affect Charities
Legislation aimed at preventing Massachusetts nonprofit health insurers from paying their board members could also end compensation for directors at other major charitable organizations. At least eight of the 50 largest nonprofit foundations in Massachusetts compensate their directors, in some cases as much or more than health insurers, according to a Globe review of annual filings with the Internal Revenue Service (Wallack, 6/10).

The Tennessean: TN's Poor Health Is Drain On Resources, Haslam Says
Unless Tennesseans make an effort to improve personal health, they could see more budget cuts in their children's education as health-care costs continue to drain the state budget, Gov. Bill Haslam said Thursday. "If you look at the portion that the state paid of the total cost for a student 40 years ago compared to now, our share is just about a half of what it used to be," Haslam said. "And you say, 'That is the state not doing its job ? why not?' Well, real simple. We are spending that much more in health care" (Hirst, 6/10).

Denver Post: Planned Cuts To Department Of Human Services Could Sever Lifeline For Disabled
Legislators demanded that state human-services officials reverse fast-growing spending for behavior therapy, day programs, dental care and other services, prompting $8 million in spending cuts for the group in the budget year starting July 1. The paring will begin in October unless parents and providers persuade Department of Human Services officials to change the plan. Opponents say it will not only decimate care for a severely troubled population but will end up costing various governments more money through increases in emergency-room visits, hospitalizations and other social costs (Booth, 6/10).
